The Biogas for Future Electric and Gas Grids (BIOFEGG) project (2018-2020) works to develop new control methods for anaerobic digestion process, a novel siloxane removal solution and upgrading method for biogas, as well as a method for terpene analysis from biogas. The project also demonstrates a recently developed innovative real-time monitoring system for the biogas quality.
The three-year project is part of ERA-NET Bioenergy and implemented by universities, research organizations and companies in Finland, Sweden and Austria. The Austrian FFG, Swedish Energy Agency and Business Finland fund the project. The project also receives industry funding.
We aim to enable flexible future use of biogas by developing an efficient and cost-effective cleaning solution for biogas produced according to the principles of sustainable development. In addition to research organizations and universities industry participants are implementing two parallel projects.
As a part of the project dissemination activities, we are organizing a seminar and networking event in order to present our project results so far and provide an opportunity for the biogas industry and stakeholders to network. In addition, there will be a discussion on the biogas industry’s opportunities and challenges.

CSC datacenter in Kajaani will host a pan-European high-performance supercomputer. The machine will be about ten times more powerful than the most powerful supercomputer currently in Europe. The decision was made by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a high performance computing (HPC) initiative supported by the European countries and the European Union. This decision will provide highly competitive HPC resources for Europe’s scientific, industrial and public users. In addition, it will provide a framework for Europe to strengthen its position as one of the pioneers of the data-driven economy.

Business delegation to China is organized by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and includes several Finnish companies operating in the water sector. The delegation has several site visits in Nanjing and then it continues to Beijing, where it participates in the High-Level Conference of the China-Europe Water Platform (CEWP) for water cooperation between China and the European Union. In Beijing, Finnish technology and solutions are introduced also to Chinese investors and administrators, including Minister of Water Resources E. Jingping.
The participants in the delegation from CEMIS are Director, Dr. Mikko Kerttula, Dr. Petri Koponen from VTT-MIKES and Dr. Jarkko Räty from the University of Oulu, Measurement Technology Unit (MITY).
Eight Beijing Sports University representatives are visiting Vuokatti since the end of January to update their know how on winter sports. The visit will last until the end of March.

The special focus of the delegation visit is in winter sports cooperation. China is currently developing its Winter Sports Culture as the Olympic host cities Beijing and Zhangjiakou are preparing for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Before the 2022 games China has decided to take this momentum and further develop winter sport activities to the masses targeting 300 million citizens. This offers enormous business opportunities for companies in several sectors throughout China. To achieve these ambitious goals, China needs to develop infrastructure of the winter sport facilities as well as the existing sport education. Also consumer products come into the picture when engaging new sport enthusiasts to winter sports.
Visit will take place between 26 – 30 March and target cities are Beijing and Harbin.
The CEMIS representatives on the trip are Director Mikko Kerttula and Head of CEMIS Business Development (CBD) Dr. Anas Al Natsheh, who will present sports and wellness related technologies and solutions of CEMIS in several events and meetings during the visit.
Environmental monitoring day 2017 will be arranged this year on the 3rd of October in SYKE facilities in Helsinki. The day is organized by Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), The Finnish partnership for Research on Natural Resources and the Environment (LYNET), Center for Measurement and Information systems (CEMIS) and Kajaani University of applied sciences.
The event is free of charge and the language of the event is English.
CEWP (China Europe Water Platform) is a collaboration network of the European Union and the Ministry of Water Resources of China for the governance, research and companies in the water sector. The event in Turku includes the annual high level dialogue conference of CEWP and business event for Chinese and European companies in the water sector.
The CEMIS participants in the event are Director, Dr. Mikko Kerttula, Business Advisers Mr. Antti Rimpiläinen and Mr. Joonas Tikkanen from CBD, and Dr. Petri Koponen from VTT-MIKES.
CEMIS has an exhibition booth in the event to showcase CEMIS solutions in water treatment and measurements, and CEMIS spinoff companies. Also several agreed business meetings with Chinese participants are agreed in advance.

On Friday the 24th of March the board of the Technology Innovation International (TII) has elected KAMK R&D and innovation Principal Lecturer and Senior Business Adviser at the Centre for Measurement and Information Systems (CEMIS) Dr. Anas Al Natsheh to be a board member of the association.
KAMK and TII both share the idea of being proactive and practice oriented. This position will enable KAMK to expand its international position and exopse itself more to global opportunities. The TII network will also work as a support network for further development and initiatives. This new opening will help KAMK to support the development of local companies and the region as a whole.

Mikko Kerttula, D.Sc. (Tech.) has been selected as the new director of CEMIS. Starting on the 1st of April 2017, the position is for four years. Kerttula has a strong experience in research and business. Recently he’s been working in international as well as new start-up companies.
Risto Oikari, who has been CEMIS director since its foundation, has started working as a principal lecturer in the school of engineering in Kajaani University of Applied Sciences.
CEMIS continues its work in internationalization of Kainuu based technologies. CEMIS held a department at Pollutec-environmental trade fair in Lyon, France 29.11-2.12.2016. Pollutec is a large trade fair which had 2200 exhibitors this year and over 60,000 guests over four days. Wide international visibility was the target for CEMIS and it was achieved. CEMIS focused on promoting water quality measurement solutions but other fields were worked on as well. In addition to CEMIS, of only eight Finnish companies partaking the fair and three were from Kainuu. So the region was well represented in France.
Organizing and hosting the booth was the responsibility of CEMIS Business Development. In the same booth we had our cooperative companies Aquaminerals Finland Oy, Meoline Oy, Prometec Tools Oy and W-Rix Oy. The companies were partly funded by Tekes for their participation costs. By having a joint booth, costs remained in control and a larger booth became possible. Working together at the booth increases the cooperation between CEMIS and the companies, creating added value to both parties.
Taking part in Pollutec was an excellent way to make new contacts, project partners and potential customers for both CEMIS and the companies. Trade fairs are important in business to business markets where mass media marketing is not so effective. Trade fairs are attended by more of the correct target audience and therefore the cost per contact goes down and the contacts are generally better. CEMIS works a lot through projects and adding the number of partners in Europe is an important goal of the near future along with further development of the already initiated South American markets.
In Pollutec there was also an event called B2Match, which consisted of pre-booked one on one meetings. These created a number of good contacts. CEMIS is active in the Enterprise Europe Network and partaking in the B2Match organized by them was natural. We made many industrial and public organization contacts with whom we hope we can work together in international projects in the future.
Overall, Pollutec gave many of both concrete contacts as well, learning, and networking in organizational and individual level. Companies got a number of good leads from Europe, South America and Middle East. CEMIS got several potential partners for EU and other international projects. CEMIS strengthened its competence and network in Europe and now gets to share its learnings between its units and partners. We have already begun contacting organizations after the trade fair. The growth of international business network will reinforce business in Kainuu region.
CEMIS will be presenting its activities and results in CEMIS Seminar 2016 on October 20th in Kajaani. The Seminar topics will cover the most promising results and future plans of CEMIS. In addition, the participants have a possibility to familiarize themselves with CEMIS activities and technologies in the classroom adjacent to the seminar venue.
CSC – IT Center For Science Ltd. will join CEMIS as a new member. In addition, the centre’s foundation agreement will be updated to reflect structural changes in the organisation and the merger of Measurepolis Development Oy into Kajaani University of Applied Sciences.

CEMIS has been a strong operator as a developer of new measuring devices, but recently, there has been an increasing need to be able to process and refine data obtained from measuring devices. The merger of Measurepolis Development Oy into Kajaani University of Applied Sciences and thereby CEMIS will now strengthen our ability to produce new technology and generate measurement technology business in Kainuu,” says Director of CEMIS, Risto Oikari.
“Enormous amounts of measurement data are produced in CEMIS’ projects, and their analysis requires competence and resources that CSC will be able to provide. Cooperation with CEMIS supports our objective to create one of Finland’s most important data analytics expertise centres in Kajaani,” says CSC’s Managing Director, Kimmo Koski.
“CEMIS continues with their ambitious objectives of which the most important are creating new business operations and clear increase in international R&D cooperation and funding. We will continue to make the cooperation between CEMIS operators closer,” Oikari says.
CEMIS will focus on three main areas: online measurement solutions for the needs of the process industry, in particular bioeconomy and the mining industry and environment monitoring (Cleantech), measurement and testing solutions for sports, well-being and health care applications using sensor, game and simulator solutions (Sport and Wellbeing), and the development of international technology business on the basis of CEMIS’ technology competence with cooperation companies (International Technology Business).

Digitalisation is rapidly affecting healthcare. Different monitoring and measurement device that can be installed in your home or used as wearables can alter image, sound and other information into bits and provide personalised information for treatment planning. Technology can also increase the feeling of safety.
Intelligent devices can anticipate when a person is falling or indicate different illness risks based on the collected data. Intelligent technology could help service providers provide more personalised and more accessible services. Technology for remote treatment is not used in homecare in the scope that is already possible.
The study was implemented in Kajaani University of Applied Sciences ten people were interviewed in Kainuu and Oulu. In addition, for a survey aimed at homecare service providers was answered by 22 people. The research was done as a thesis in technology competence management programme (Master of Engingeering). The research was commissioned by CEMIS. The study is a part of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences intelligent solution theme.

The tenth Environmental Monitoring Days will be held in Vuokatti in Holiday Club Katinkulta. The theme for the celebratory year is “Priceless water”. The event will look at water measurement as a part of the circular economy and water treatment technology solutions in industry and water maintenance. Reclaiming valuable materials, the technologies for the process as well as measurements related to that are on the agenda also.
The speakers at the event are the central to the Finnish water treatment industry and research. In honor of the celebratory year, the last ten years will be examined as well; what kind of development there has been since the first Environmental Monitoring Days?
Measurepolis Developent Ltd. and CEMIS will be hosting the event.
A research team from CEMIS-Oulu has developed a measurement device for trace metals and has been piloting it in the mining industry. The innovation is commercialized through a new start-up, Meoline, with a goal to develop a measurement device for global markets. The research has been made with the funding of ELY-centre, Kainuu regional council and Tekes. CEMIS business development was involved in the commercialization preparation.
Metals in discharge water create a burden for water bodies, measuring metals regularly the burden can be reduced significantly. The company, as well as the customers, aim to create an ‘early warning’ concept where an alarm goes off immediately after the metal content exceeds a given limit. The device and service concept also takes into consideration the reliability, maintenance and upkeep related issues, which are a challenge in continuous environmental monitoring.
Now the company has a prototype that can operate in a Finnish arctic climate. There are interested end users in industry and authorities abroad as well. The prototype is developed into a commercial measurement device by the end of 2016 and first pilot customers will have the devices in use by the last quarter of the year. The device can measure up to a microgram per liter of metals in different waters. First customers for the company are in Europe and in South America.

CEMIS presented their activities in Kainuu Connection event in University of Oulu 9.9.2015, where the idea was to present different employment possibilities of Kainuu for university students. CEMIS presented a water treatment unit demo developed in Kajaani university of applied sciences as well as the MEAN metal analyzer developed in CEMIS-Oulu. Athene Exergaming exercise simulator was also present at the event.
Interest to Nordic skiing sports research brings experts from various fields to the 3rd International Congress on Science and Nordic Skiing (ICNSN 2015) in Vuokatti 5.-8.6.2015.
In the congress 55 researchers from 12 different countries examine the research field of Nordic skiing. The theme of the congress is “from science to practice”.
The congress will gather together scientists, medical doctors, coaches, representatives from the ski industry, students, and last but not least, athletes to discuss the latest developments in Nordic Skiing. This congress will be a good time to enjoy and share ideas between friends and colleagues.

In Kajaani the old old courthouse square’s clock is now traced to MIKES’ atomic clock in Kajaani and shows the official Finnish time. MIKES atomic clocks are situated in Espoo and Kajaani. This way risks can be avoided if something happens to either one of the locations where the clocks are held.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. and the Centre for Metrology MIKES have merged in the beginning of 2015. Mikes is now a research unit of VTT.
FinnMateria exhibition will take place in Jyväskylä Pavilionki on the 19-20.11.2014 for the fifth time. The exhibition is an international event for the mining, metal processing, rock material industry and earth construction. In 2012, 167 exhibitors were present and more than 3300 people visited the exhibition.

South America has a lot of mining operations that are looking for green technologies and could benefit from the mining know how from Finnish industry and research institutions. CEMIS director Risto Oikari visited Brazil in the beginning of April to introduce CEMIS operations and meet with local companies. The purpose of the trip was to participate in the company delegation lead by environmental minister Ville Niinistö. The main goal for the delegation was the promotion of Finnish clean tech, sustainable mining, bioenergy and waste management industry in Brasil. In addition the trip aimed to improve the R&D relations with Brasilian operators. trip’s purpose for CEMIS was to get familiar with Brasilian mining industry, create networks to Brasilian mining industry research facilities and companies and also inform the environmental minister and the officials about CEMIS’ capabilities in environmental monitoring field. The visit also included the cooperation partner of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, Federal University of Rio De Janeiro.
In the end of April CEMIS director also visited in Chile, in the Frederico Santamaria technical university and ExpoMin -fair. The background for this trip was in the cooperation agreement between the Chilean and Finnish governments. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy is planning cooperation between Finnish and Chilean companies and educational and research institutions. This cooperation included also Tekes and Tekes Green Mining programme. This creates good grounds for utilising CEMIS mining know-how in implementing the cooperation.
Next visit to South America will take place in early August.
The 9th annual Environmental Monitoring Days gathered around 80 experts from environmental monitoring field in Kaukametsä congress centre in Kajaani in the end of March.
The two day event focused on
1. Sustainable energy production and environmental monitoring
2. Industrial wastewater and water management
3. Environmental monitoring business
4. Natural water and air quality
The keynote speech was given by Dr., Professor Hendrik Emons, JRC-IRMM – Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements, Belgium, who also visited the facilities of CEMIS-Oulu and MIKES in Kajaani.
Athene Exergaming, developed at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, was awarded as the second best innovation in the worldwide Leading Trade Fair for Fitness, Wellness and Health. Athene Exergaming was nominated in the category “Interior and Design”. FIBO is held yearly in Germany. This year about 100 000 visitors and 700 exhibitors are expected in Cologne.
Athene Exergaming is targeted mainly to gyms and rehabilitation. Different exercising devices, virtual environments and games are integrated in different set ups. The innovation is targeting to international gym markets this fall. An important part of the project is the preparation of the commercialization. FIBO provides a great opportunity to get visibility. Success in Innovation Awards will raise international attention and open up opportunities for the upcoming market launch.
The project manager Veli-Matti Nurkkala is delighted of the success in tough competition.
– “Success in FIBO is a huge achievement for 16-month development. Athene Exergaming was the only innovation for the universities, which reached the finals.”
The development is done at Kajaani University in CEMIS development program in co-operation with numerous companies as well as universities of Jyväskylä, Oulu and Sendai. The R&D is funded by EU and Tekes.
Vesa Virtanen has 25 years of experience in research in the field of analytic chemistry. He did his Ph.D. in 1993 from University of Oulu in the field of chemistry and received the title of adjunct professor in 2003 from the faculty of science in University of Oulu in the field of analytic chemistry, especially in the field of separation methods. His experience include working abroad from 1994-2000 in Universite Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France; Tübingen University in Germany and in the Joint Research Centre, Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (I.R.M.M.)
He has also worked for Orion Pharma in developing analytic methods and as a team manager from 2000-2004. In 2004 Vesa Virtanen became the research director in the biotechnology laboratory in Sotkamo where he started the research in the field of biosensors. In 2010 he was chosen to lead the Kajaani Unviersity Consortium. In 2011 he became the director of the new measurement technology unit of CEMIS-Oulu, which operates in Kajaani and Sotkamo. Vesa Virtanen has over 170 scientific publications.
Professor Kalevi Kalliomäki from MIKES will be lecturing on time measurement now and in the future in Kainuu Museum on the 19th of February at 18:00. The lecture is a part of the museum’s exhibition on the history of time measurement. The lecture is free of charge.

Athene was presented in the beginning of December in Helsinki in a Tekes innovation event. In the end of November Athene was presented in Kuopio in “Towards Smart Specialisation 2014-2020” –seminar. The same seminar introduced “Europe turns its eyes towards North” –video by Sakari Partanen. The video also features the Athene simulator. In 2014 April Athene is going to FIBO (The Leading International Trade Show for Fitness, Wellness & Health) exhibition in Cologne, Germany.

TEKES Green mining -programme annual seminar is held in Nosturi in Helsinki on the 27th – 28th of November. During the seminar the final seminars from NICK project managed by CEMIS-OULU and MIN-NOVATION project managed by Kainuun Etu will have their projects’ final seminars.
MIN-NOVATION project aims to aims to create a transnational network of knowledge, state-of-the-art technologies and good practices within the mineral waste management and prevention sector in the Baltic Sea Region. The final seminar is held on the 27th of Novermber.
NICK project in CEMIS Oulu has been funded through TEKES Green mining -programme. The project aimed develop novel and rapid on-line/on-site methods and instruments to monitor mining site discharge waters, especially nickel content. Final seminar of the NICK project will be held in the morning on the 28th of Novermber.
CEMIS director Risto Oikari will also be speaking in the seminar on the topic of measurement technology development and commercialization.

CEMIS Business Development (CBD) has recently signed a contract with the Centre for metrology and accreditation (MIKES) to conduct more economic impact studies after a successful compilation of the first two studies for MIKES. The first study was on the economic impact of recently established flow calibration at Mikes-Kajaani on the Finnish industry and what does it mean in terms of return on investment for MIKES and Finnish government in general. The second study was about three different types of calibration services market in Eastern Europe.
CBD helps CEMIS partners in commercialization of different measurement technologies and supports in project initiation and preparation. The projects include both national and international ones. CBD also does direct commissions to customers outside CEMIS. The economic impact studies are very demanding, high-level studies and only a few organizations conduct these in Europe. These new economic impact studies are a good addition to existing consultation services of CBD, which include technology market and international marketing studies, business model development, technology commercialization, research valorization and innovation management.

NGS 2013 is a two day event that will gather the top names of game industry to Kajaani in order to exchange thoughts, learn about new ideas and create new contacts on the 3rd-4th of October.
This is the second time the event is organized and encouraged by the last year’s positive feedback the summit is going to be a two day event with over 25 speakers. On the first day the emphasis is on networking and recruiting including the NGS Pitching Contest and culminating with the Garage Party in the evening. The second day is more of a conference day with the Playground Challenge Final as “an icing on the cake”.

Forest Industry Future Cluster, aiming at creating a successful future for the forest industry, is going on a national RoadShow to inspire SMEs on the possibilities of forest. Entrepreneurs get information on new opportunities and business on the Forest Bioeconomy RoadShow tour this autumn.
The RoadShow is arranged in cooperation with the Ministry of Employment and the Economy’s Strategic Programme for the Forest Sector, Finnish Bioeconomy Cluster FIBIC Oy and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The seminars give information about the business opportunities regarding forest. New entrepreneurs entering the industry get information how they can be helped, for instance through projects under the Forest Industry Future Cluster.

Project Athene (CEMIS Development Programme, 1/2013-12/2014) at the CSE simulation center of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences is developing Athene technology. Athene combines various fitness and rehabilitation equipment with virtual and video imagined environments, immersive gaming view and advanced motion control, thus creating a new kind of environment for virtual training, testing, research and tourism. The first pilot was an orienteering simulator, which was introduced to the public during the World Orienteering Championships in July.
The Athene environment was available for testing for one week during the World Orienteering Championships and Kainuu Orienteering Week in Vuokatti. Over 300 people tested the simulator from a total of 30 countries. The overall reception was positive. The rogaining sprint race in Virtual-Kajaani, developed for the Athene environment, got a user rating of 4,4/5 (1 = very weak, 5= very good). This is an excellent result for six months of development work. The user questionnaire implemented during the pilot reinforced the positive attitude towards the simulator and demonstrated a clear demand for a product like Athene. Pilot also worked as an excellent marketing channel creating visibility in both national and international media. Facebook pages and Youtube-videos already reached thousands of people across the world.
In June a parallel project started alongside Athene, when Athene+ – Future game environment to make people move) – project (6/2013 – 8/2014) got funding from Tekes’ Skene – Games Refueled programme. Athene+ project develops new gaming and adventure environments. Athene+ project develops new games and uses existing ones in order to create motivating contents for practicing sports, fitness testing and rehabilitation. The gaming and adventure environment’s one starting point is to motivate sedentary people to exercise with the help of games.
The next goals in Project Athene will be adding new fitness equipment to the environment, developing an orienteering game and new virtual environments, integrating a heart rate monitor to the software and using heart rate as a game controller. The development of new games will concentrate on creating content which can be used in fitness training, fitness testing and helping the elderly maintain their functionality. The exercises can be for instance running on a virtual jogging path and finding clues that lead to a target.
With the development of diverse game technology, various new business opportunities are opening to different industries. Game and experience environment can be used in tourism services and marketing, as a development environment for treatment methods, a new service concept for fitness service providers as well as a coaching and research tool in professional sports.
Various companies from different industries are participating in the project. Vuokatti Superpark, Satavision, Mapline, Research Institute for Olympic Sports (KIHU), Remedy Entertainment, Rust0, Kajaani Game Studios, Supercell, Kerko sport, MeVEA, Kainuu Social and Health Care Joint Authority, Vuokatti Sports Institute, Eko-Aims, The Finnish Orienteering Federation, HUR Labs, Jyväskylä University Department of Biology of Physical Activity and University of Sendai in Japan. Companies and organizations participate to the expert group activities in the project and provide technology as well as financing for the project.

Jyväskylä University’s Sports Technology Unit of the Department of Biology of Physical Activity continues its Master and Doctoral programmes from 1.1.2014 for the next five years. Jyväskylä University and Sotkamo municipality signed the cooperation and funding agreement in a seminar held in Vuokatti Sports Institute on the 5th of September.
Sports Technology Unit of Jyväskylä University started their activities in Vuokatti ten years ago. In addition to Master and Doctoral programmes the unit has focused on studying Nordic skiing. The unit aims to provide the Kainuu and Oulu regions professional sports technology know-how, develop industry driven research and generate permanent international research activity in the area.
The head of Sports Technology Unit, professor Vesa Linnamo, is satisfied with the opportunities Vuokatti provides for sports technology research.
– Considering winter sports research, the conditions are ideal. The Vuokatti ski tunnel has enabled skiing research in laboratory conditions. The developed measurement methods and conditions have also attracted international research partners to Vuokatti.
10 years of comprehensive and active research
41 Masters degrees in Sports Technology and one Doctoral degree in Sports Science have been completed since the Sports Technology Unit started its education programme in January of 2004. The programme requires a 180 credits background of studies in the fields of engineering or information technology either in a university or a university of applied sciences.
– In Vuokatti, diverse research projects have been carried out where students with a technical background have contributed a lot in terms of their know-how. The most memorable projects, according to Linnamo, have been the development of the ski tester, development of the dynamic balance measurement device, and of course the first doctoral dissertation defense.
Linnamo says that the funding opportunities and close cooperation with companies in Kainuu region have brought a lot of added value to the research. In total there has been cooperation with 50 companies and organizations. Sports Technology students have obtained 43 jobs from which 26 are in the Kainuu region.
– The Unit in Vuokatti has, through their own activity, been able to support the research of the Department of Biology of Physical Activity both in quantity and quality. The financing possibilities in the region have facilitated the creation of international level research laboratories, which in turn enable top level research.
One visible part of the Vuokatti Unit’s activities are international scientific congresses and symposiums. International Congress on Science & Nordic Skiing was held in Vuokatti in 2006 and 2012. In 2012 the congress attracted more than 150 participants from 13 different countries and 78 scientific presentations were held during the conference. Next time the congress is taking place in early summer of 2015.

Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) has evaluated on a national level the societal and regional impacts of universities and universities of applied sciences. The FINHEEC report, published on 18th of June, presented best practicies and recommendations. The activities of CEMIS as well as Adult and Conintuing Education (AIKOPA), both located in Kajaani, were considered as best practices.
On the 30th of May in 2013 a seminar was held in Kajaani on the policy programme of Ministry of Employment and Economy on how to make Finland a leading country in sustainable mining. Director for Strategic Programme for the Cleantech Business Mari Pantsar-Kallio introduced the policy programme and indicated that Finland has strengths in cleantech business, especially in energy efficiency. The policy programme highlights that mining in Finland should be economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Kari Knuutila Chief Technology Officer at Outotec Oyj was responsible for the research and education part of the policy programme. Research and education in sustainable mining should be planned so that organizations would profile themselves to certain competence areas. Also, internationality and cooperation among domestic organizations is a key factory in the research and education part.
Head of the engineering school in Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, Jari Kähkönen, presented the specialization option for mining engineering studies in the university. The training is implemented in cooperation with Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences and Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences. Vesa Virtanen, director of CEMIS-Oulu presented their activities and projects where measurement technologies have been developed for the mining industry. In the end of the seminar all forty participants went for a tour in the mining related R&D facilities and familiarized themselves with measurement solutions developed in CEMIS.
The policy programme has several suggestions for action, in these CEMIS has significant role. One suggestion in the sustainable mining policy programme is that government develops incentives for the mining industry to minimize environmental impacts of their operation and to adopt methods that go beyond the legal requirements regarding environment. Here the real time measurement solutions that are being developed in CEMIS have a crucial role.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences received funding from Tekes’ Skene – Games Refueled programme. ATHENE+ project’s target is to develop a new kind of gaming and experience environment that is based on ATHENE technology which is currently being developed in the EU-funded CEMIS Development Program. ATHENE technology combines various fitness and rehabilitation equipment with virtual and video imaged environments, immersive vision, and advanced motion control, thus creating a new kind of virtual training, testing, research and tourism environment.
ATHENE + project aims at the development and use of games that will bring motivating content to practice sports, fitness testing and rehabilitation. As a starting point for the new gaming and experience environment is the idea to inspire people to move by playing games. Adventurous and addictive content adds value to existing services for many business areas. Versatile content development that includes game tech solutions opens up also new business opportunities for a number of industries. ATHENE-game environment can be exploited e.g., in tourism services and marketing, as a tool for rehabilitation and therapy methods, as a new opportunity for fitness facilities’ services, as a tool for sports and elite sports training and research activity, and as a new service for activity tourism.
The R&D project will last for 13 months, and it will start no later than September 2013. The estimated total cost of the project is EUR 420 000. A number of companies in various industries are involving in the project. Included are Vuokatti Super Park, Lumivision, Mapline, Research Institute for Olympic Sports (KIHU), Remedy Entertainment, Rust0, Kajaani Game Studios, Supercell, Kerko Sport, MeVEA, Kainuu social and health authority, Vuokatti Sports Institute, Eko-Aims, The Finnish Orienteering Federation, HUR Labs, University of Jyväskylä, Department of Biology of Physical Activity and Sendai University, Japan. Companies and organizations are involved in the project by participating in the project’s expert groups, providing technologies to the project, as well as participating in the financing of the project.
CEMIS Recreation Day will be held on Wednesday the 27th of March 2013 in Vuokatti.
The European Commission has granted funding for two CEMIS measurement technology development projects. The funding was granted from the European Commission’s European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP). The project implemented by CEMIS-OULU, the measurement technology research unit in Oulu university, and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences is a part of a joint project of seven European metrology institutions where measurement solutions and their standards for a data transfer system based on quantum technology is being developed. Data transfer based on quantum technology enables unbreakable data transfer solutions when considering data security.
Anas Al Natsheh, business development expert at CEMIS, is taking part into the Metrology for Industrial Quantum Communication (MIQC) programme. His responsibility is the commercialization aspects related to the developed measurement solutions. In addition to CEMIS OULU, MIKES and Aalto University are partaking to the project in Finland. The project is the first project to receive funding for both technology development as well as commercialization and business development from the EMRP programme.
CEMIS also received funding for another EMRP project. The Kajaani unit of MIKES is joining the German national metrology institute Physikalisch-Technische Bundesantstalt (PTB) and 10 other European metrology institutes to develop large force metrology. The aim of the project is to develop especially the reliability of large force measurements, minimize the uncertainty factors of the measurements and develop the traceability of the measurements. The MIKES Kajaani unit is responsible of force, torque, mass and liquid flow primary standard measurements development.
European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) is a pan-European measurement science and technology – metrology – research programme. European Commission Article 169 parallel to the Seventh Framework Programme supports the programme. EMRP is funded by the European Commission and participating in the programme are the countries along with their metrology institutions through the Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET e.V.). EMRP programme began in 2009 and ends in 2015. The entire budget is 400 million €. EMRP programme is mainly funding metrology institutions, but in addition research grants are also given to other actors such as research centers and universities. European Commission is preparing a new programme starting in 2014 that is focusing on metrology development funding where the emphasis is even more on the business development related to the field in addition to metrology development.
The first Northern Game Summit (NGS 2012) will take place in Kajaani 27. – 28.9.2012. In Kajaani there is a noteworthy concentration of game development resources, thanks to Kajaani University of Applied Sciences’ successful and high-class game development education, fast-developing game testing knowhow and new young game developers and game companies.
The two day event will gather the top names of game industry to Kajaani to exchange thoughts, learn about new ideas and create new contacts.
The event’s program is divided in two. On Thursday evening the game students of Kajaani University of Applied Sciences will display their games and network with game companies at the Networking&Recruiting event, where companies can also showcase their businesses and extend invitations to the new experts to join up.
The actual conference takes place on Friday, when recognized game industry professionals take the stage. The handsome list of speakers is made up of representatives from game companies in Finland and abroad. Among others, there will be speakers from Rovio, Remedy, Wooga, Supercell, Digital Chocolate, Yager, Recoil, Housemarque, Mountain Sheep, Stardoll, Umbra and BurgerGames.
After the morning’s keynotes, the conference presentations divide into three simultaneous tracks that run side by side: Game Business, Game Development and Game Testing.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences is looking to liven up student exchanges and research and development competence. Silesia University from Poland and Toronto University of Canada are involved in such cooperation, which is also in the process of developing with Castilla La Mancha University in Spain.
– In particular there will be more practical training places available abroad than there are currently, emphasizes Risto Oikari, the Director of CEMIS. The issue arose during a mining seminar organized by CEMIS.
– During the last two years, the growth of industry has created a clearer need to go international in terms of training and its content for the purposes of maintaining training quality, networking and research and development opportunities, explains Jari Kähkönen, Head of the School of Engineering at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences.
Internationalization is also crucial to universities of applied sciences in terms of project funding.
– In order to keep up in the race for project finance we have to have international competence. We’ve managed to have pieces of research included in the Tekes Green Mining program, and they are about to start. Our current funding will cover research work until the end of 2013. A new application period is beginning this year and we believe we also have a good chance of being included again, says Kähkönen.
The startup of CEMIS, the research and training Centre for Measurement and Information Systems, has been extremely successful. The targets set for its first year of operations have been reached according to almost 20 different indicators, with main objectives even exceeded. For example, two new businesses were created when the target was one. 13 commercial inventions were born when the target was four. CEMIS also gained more national R&D and business funding than planned and the amount of theses and publications exceeded targets.
– Excellent quality gets results, makes us attractive and provides us with more finance, as Lauri Lajunen, the Rector of Oulu University, expressed his satisfaction. According to Lajunen, CEMIS has a unique structure and way of operating.
– Kajaani University of Applied Sciences stands out positively from other universities of applied sciences thanks to CEMIS. No other university of applied sciences has such a form of cooperation shared with different sectors. CEMIS has brought us credibility and strength for international operations, said a grateful President of KUAS, Turo Kilpeläinen.
All forms of operation have been successfully started up. The operations of the Centre for Metrology and Accreditation, MIKES Kajaani office are fully and profitably up and running. The organization of Kajaani UAS’ information systems competence area and the Oulu University Unit of Metrology research, CEMIS Oulu has been fully implemented. Jyväskylä University has assumed responsibility for the research and development of sports technology measurements. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has expanded its responsibility in the development of wireless measurement and information systems.

A CEMIS Smart Systems Workshop with the theme of vehicle information systems will take place at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (Taito 1 Auditorium, Kuntokatu 5) on 29.2.2012.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together representatives from companies, research and education institutions and to provoke discussion concerning cooperation opportunities in vehicle information systems and more widely in smart systems. During the day, recent research and training in Kajaani, local business operations, cooperation networks and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences’ international partner from Germany, Hochschule Heilbronn’s research topics will be presented.
During the afternoon, it is intended that development of the vehicle information system roadmap previously created within the CEMIS framework will continue, new shared topics of interest and possible regional and international cooperation projects will be considered.

Game and simulation is one of CEMIS’ five application areas. A vehicle simulator has been developed by Oulu University’s Psychology Research Unit, SkilLab in cooperation with Kajaani University of Applied Sciences and Kainuu Vocational College and related research operations commenced in the form of the CreaVehicle project, mainly funded by the Joint Authority of the Kainuu Region. The project ended at the end of 2011. The development of the vehicle simulator and related training and research will continue within the CEMIS development programme in cooperation with Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, the Metrology Unit of the University of Oulu – CEMIS Oulu and with the Vuokatti Sports Technology Unit of Jyväskylä University. The vehicle simulator developed in the previous project has been transferred to purpose built facilities at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences. The currently available psychophysiological measurement expertise combined with skills and know-how in simulator engineering and metrology make Kajaani University of Applied Sciences unique among other universities of applied sciences in Finland. In future, students in Kajaani will continue to have the opportunity to specialise in game technology of which the development of simulator technology is a crucial part alongside the development of games and game-like solutions.
On September 16th of this year, CEMIS organized its first staff recreation day in the magnificent setting of Vuokatti Sports Institute. Approx. fifty people took part, i.e. about half of CEMIS’ forces. The morning was spent generating project ideas which inspired thoughts on the future of CEMIS’ fields of focus and opportunities for schemes and projects. In particular, the Green Mining session attracted a crowd. After the midday meal the actual recreational part of program started with CEMIS’ folk being divided and mixed into different groups. The groups had to take part in a competition involving different tasks from traditional relay races to shooting with catapults. The victorious team was awarded a prize during the evening’s sauna session at Hiekkalinna (Sand Castle!) to which we travelled by coach after the competition. As well as supper, Hiekkalinna offered a wonderful setting for a sauna and socializing. At the end of the evening all team members were awarded (like children after a skiing race) a bag of sweets as a prize for their endeavors. All in all, it can be said that the weather was excellent, the arrangements worked well and everyone enjoyed themselves. The next recreation day will be in the early spring.
On 17.11.2011, the Centre for Measurement and Information Systems CEMIS organized its first international seminar on measuring low metal concentration in industrial processes. During the seminar, internationally respected expert in methods of measuring alkali and heavy metal content, Adjunct Professor Penelope Monkhouse, from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, Dr. Martti Aho from VTTTechnical Research Centre of Finland from Jyväskylä, and Esa Hassinen, Head of Research at the UPM Research Centre in Lappeenranta delivered presentations. About 20 metrology researchers and metrology related company representatives from Kajaani participated in the seminar by invitation.
CEMIS has actively developed new methods of measuring small metal concentrations in liquid flows. The seminar provided comprehensive information about alternative measurement methods that have been used in gas phase measurements, and company needs for the development and implementation of new methods of measurement were also identified.
The Kajaani driving simulation centre studies how the police operate in unexpected traffic situations. The driving simulation environment constructed in the facilities of the University campus provides a close approximation of what it really feels like to drive. (Yle 9.12.2011)
