CEMIS Projects
CEMIS carries out research and development projects with companies, universities, research centers and universities of applied sciences. The projects are implemented in all CEMIS competence areas and they aim to find out and solve measurement related problems of companies or our partners. The solutions can range from an individual measurement to a new measurement device. In larger projects new products such as measurement sensors, measurement and testing systems, data transfer and control systems, game and simulator applications are developed for companies or our partners.
Projects are prepared in cooperation with our customers and funded through joint funding, by using public R&D financing instruments or through direct assignments from customers. Over 30 RDI projects are carried out in CEMIS every year.

Active projects

The programme consists of five parallel two-year projects. The first project aims to develop measurement solutions and expertise for bioeconomy, mining and process industries and environmental monitoring (INNOBIO). The second project is for developing small-size (miniaturized) measurement solutions for lactate measurements and environmental monitoring
(MINIME). The aim of third project is to strengthen the competitiveness of the target group companies by developing KAMK's expertise and education in industrial operation and maintenance management (TÄRY). The fourth project aims to develop the innovation environments of wellbeing, health care and sports, and to increase technological competence and competitiveness in these areas in Kainuu (HYTELI) at international level. The fifth project will develop and pilot a model to increase the success rate of early stage companies accelerating the growth of high technology sector in Kainuu (BUZTECH)
The impact goals of the programme recognise national strategies, including key Finnish
government projects, the programmes of EU Regional Development Funds, and the Implementation Plan for the Kainuu Regional Program. The general objectives of the programme include the aim to create new jobs to Kainuu region, to set-up new spinoff companies based on CEMIS technologies, to increase the contract research volume of CEMIS members, to boost commercialisation of research results, to increase international funding in RDI, to develop education further to meet better the requirements of companies in Kainuu, and to support technology companies in expanding to international markets. In quantitative objectives the goal was set to establish 4-7 new companies and commercialise at least four technologies developed at CEMIS.

KAMK's expertise and education in industrial operation and maintanance management. The project provides such education to the target group companies directly, and after the project completion, such education continues as a regular education of KAMK for degree students as well as continuing education students. The project is accomplished in solid collaboration with industry. In addition to educational objectives, the project also improves the target group companies' sustainability by providing tools to improve energy-efficiency of industrial processes. One further objective of the project is to emphasize KAMK's strategy as a leading university in smart industrial solutions. In fact, there is a raising need of the education in industrial operation and maintanance management but very few Finnish universities are able to offer such education.
The project is a joint effort with CSC- IT Center for Science Ltd. The role of CSC is to develop new methods to analyze complex condition monitoring data. The project execution is supported by two members of CEMIS (Centre for Measurement and Information System), Measurement Technology Unit of University of Oulu and VTT - Technical Research Center Ltd. They develop process measurements and flow simulation techniques in their parallel CEMIS project.

Completed projects
The programme was mainly funded by the ERDF programme for Eastern and Northern Finland, with a total budget of approximately EUR 3.52 million. A steering group comprising representatives of CEMIS members, financiers and businesses guides the programme and its projects. The programme and its projects were divided into three development packages: new technologies for sustainable biofuels and mining (the BIOMIT and KAIMIT projects), new sport and wellbeing technologies and services (the LIIKUTPA project), and international R&D, technology transfer services and demonstrations (the KANTELI project). The programme implemented joint technology development projects in key technology and application fields of importance to the business development of local enterprises, developed collaboration in realising hardware solutions, completed marketing and PR measures related to outcomes of the programme, and promoted commercial exploitation of R&D project findings.
One quantitative programme objective was to increase the Centre's industry and international funding substantially compared to the previous 2015-2016 programme. A further aim was to establish at least 6 new enterprises and commercialise at least 4 technologies developed at CEMIS.
